Ultrasound Guided Breast Cyst Aspiration

A breast cyst is a fluid filled sac (like a tiny balloon) within the breast. The purpose of a cyst aspiration is to remove the contents of a cyst and deflate it.   Breast cysts are common in women. They can cause little pain and typically benign (not cancerous).

You will lie on your back on a stretcher in the ultrasound room. The area of concern is located with ultrasound and your skin is cleaned with betadine (the same soap used in the operating room to clean skin.)   Following a local anesthetic (Lidocaine), a small sterile needle is inserted into the area of interest under direct ultrasound visualization. Suction is applied and all of the fluid is removed from the area. A Band Aid is them placed over the needle entry site.

Sometimes the fluid is sent to the pathologist for evaluation. If the fluid is sent, results are usually available in three (3) business days. Your physician will call you with your results. When you receive your results, your physician will discuss what the next step should be.

No special care is required after this procedure. Keep the Band Aid on for a day or two, replacing it after bathing. The procedure may take 30-45 minutes.

Preparing for your Ultrasound guided Breast Cyst Aspiration

This is a simple, common procedure that requires no preparation on your part.   If you are taking a medication that increases your risk of bleeding, including aspirin, Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen, coumadin, heparin, Naprosyn, or Aleve, please let the technologist know when you arrive.
