Vascular Ultrasound - Frequently Asked Questions

What tests are performed?

The tests performed include those to evaluate for disease in the carotid arteries for stroke risk; circulation in the legs; abdominal aorta for aneurysm; evaluation of leg or arm veins for blood clots or swelling and for causes of varicose veins.

Is it painful?

All studies are non-invasive, so there is practically no discomfort to the patient, aside from the light pressure the technologist may apply with the ultrasonic probe.

What are the risks involved with ultrasound?

The non-invasive nature of ultrasound minimizes the risk to the patient.  There are no dyes, injections, nor radiation.

How much time does it take?

Usually most studies can be completed within an hour.

Is it expensive?

Ultrasound studies are significantly lower in cost than many related studies.  Most insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid cover these services offered by ProScan Imaging.

What preparation is needed?

Generally, no preparation is needed.  If your doctor has ordered a test to rule out abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), we require that you do not take anything by mouth after midnight except for oral medication (with water if necessary).

Who performs the tests?

These test are performed by certified technologists.  These technologists have achieved the highly regarded credential of RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist) by the national accrediting organization, ARDMS.  Their standards are exceptionally high.  ARDMS certification provides assurance that the sonographer has obtained the full range of knowledge and skill competencies needed for maintaining the highest standards in ultrasound practice.

How do I get an ultrasound examination?

To schedule an ultrasound study your physician must order the test with an appropriate indication.  To reach our scheduling department please call 1-877-PROSCAN.
